Project Background
The customer in Thailand required size classification of wood chips to separate target-size material (0–50 mm) from oversized wood chips (>50 mm). The wood chips had an irregular shape and a bulk density of approximately 380–450 kg/m³. The customer specified a target throughput of 40 t/h and required continuous mechanical screening.
Unlike powders or regularly shaped particles, wood chips typically have irregular shapes and different length-to-width ratios. Some pieces may be relatively long and thin or may overlap during screening. Therefore, selecting Wood Chip Screening Equipment requires more than simply considering the screen opening. Material characteristics, bulk density, target particle size, throughput, and screening method all need to be evaluated together.
Based on these requirements, Sanyuantang selected the FYBS-4060 Wood Chip Screener Oscillating Screen for this project.

Sanyuantang’s Wood Chip Screening Solution
Based on the customer’s wood chip characteristics, bulk density, and 40 t/h target throughput, Sanyuantang recommended the FYBS-4060 Wood Chip Screener Oscillating Screen.
The equipment uses an oscillating screening method and is suitable for materials such as wood chips with relatively coarse particle sizes and irregular shapes. Since this project required only one primary size separation point, the machine was configured with one screening layer and a 2-inch (50.8 mm) screen opening.
The overall screening process can be understood as:
Wood Chips → FYBS-4060 → Target-Size Wood Chips + Oversized Wood Chips
After entering the screening machine, the wood chips move across the screen surface. Material smaller than the screen opening passes through the screen, while oversized wood chips continue toward the discharge end and are separated.

Why FYBS-4060 Was Selected for This Wood Chip Screening Project
- Capacity: The equipment has a rated capacity of 600–1000 m³/h. On-site testing showed a screening rate of 18 m³ per minute, meeting the customer’s large-scale production requirements.
- High screening accuracy: The four-vibration-source design generates reciprocating elliptical oscillation. Materials jump and slide across the screen surface, providing a longer screening path and effective size classification.
- Suitable for wood chips: Wood chips are dry, coarse, irregular materials. The equipment is specifically designed for materials such as wood chips, sawdust, and biomass and can separate fines and overlong material.
- Energy efficient: The machine uses a first-grade-efficiency permanent magnet synchronous variable-frequency motor, providing a lighter and more energy-efficient configuration with multiple protection functions.
- Easy maintenance: The exciter bearings use imported high-speed-grade bearings and are maintenance-free. The equipment is also easy to disassemble, making container transportation more convenient.
Sanyuantang’s Recommendations for Wood Chip Screening
For a Wood Chip Screening project, Sanyuantang recommends evaluating the following factors rather than selecting equipment based only on the material name.
1. Define the Target Particle Size
Different wood chip applications have different final particle-size requirements.
Before selecting the screen, determine:
- Target product particle-size range
- Definition of oversized material
- Whether fines need to be removed
- Number of final particle-size fractions required
This project mainly required separation of target-size wood chips from oversized material. Therefore, a single screening layer was sufficient for the required size classification, without adding multiple screening layers unnecessarily.
2. Select Equipment Based on Bulk Density and Throughput
The wood chips in this project had a bulk density of 380–450 kg/m³, with a target throughput of 40 t/h.
Based on this bulk density, the theoretical volumetric flow rate is approximately:
40 ÷ 0.38 ≈ 105.3 m³/h
40 ÷ 0.45 ≈ 88.9 m³/h
Therefore, the customer’s target throughput corresponds to approximately 89–105 m³/h.
This conversion helps with equipment selection and shows why Wood Chip Screening should not be evaluated based only on tonnes per hour. Bulk density must also be considered.
3. Consider Wood Chip Shape When Selecting the Screen Opening
Wood chips are not spherical particles. Pieces with similar dimensions can behave differently during screening because of variations in length, width, and thickness.
Sanyuantang therefore recommends considering:
Material size + wood chip shape + bulk density + target throughput + actual screening requirements
This project used a 2-inch (50.8 mm) screen opening to separate target-size wood chips from oversized material.
Actual screening results can also be affected by moisture content, particle-size distribution, material shape, and feeding uniformity. The final screening performance should therefore be evaluated under actual operating conditions.
4. Determine the Number of Screening Layers Based on the Required Fractions
More screening layers do not necessarily mean better screening.
If the customer only needs:
Target-size wood chips + oversized wood chips
one primary screening point is generally sufficient.
This project therefore used a 1-layer screen because the customer’s current screening objective was clear and did not require multiple wood chip size fractions.
If additional size classification is required in the future, the screen layers and screen openings can be redesigned according to the required particle-size ranges.
5. Oversize Separation Is Important in Wood Chip Screening
Oversized wood chips are often an important fraction to control in practical wood chip screening applications.
If oversized pieces enter subsequent processes directly, they may affect conveying, crushing, processing, or combustion.
Therefore, Sanyuantang considers not only the target particle size but also:
How to separate oversized wood chips effectively?
The objective is to allow target-size material to pass through the screen while consistently removing oversized wood chips.
Project Results
Through this project, Sanyuantang provided the Thailand customer with a mechanical screening solution for wood chip size classification.
The main configuration and project results included:
- FYBS-4060 Wood Chip Screener Oscillating Screen
- Screening configuration based on the customer’s wood chip characteristics
- 1-layer screening for single-stage size separation
- 2-inch (50.8 mm) screen opening
- Screening of approximately 0–50 mm target-size wood chips
- Separation of oversized wood chips as a separate material stream
- Target throughput of 40 t/h
- Equipment installation completed in Thailand
- 3-day installation period
- 1-day commissioning period
For applications requiring higher screening precision or multiple particle-size fractions, the screen opening and number of screening layers can be further adjusted according to actual particle-size distribution, moisture content, throughput, and final product requirements.
