Customer’s Screening Challenges

The customer’s raw material was more complex than a clean wood-chip feed. In addition to wood chips, the feed contained roots and small pieces of debris, with noticeable differences in particle size and shape.

The customer therefore needed a screening solution that could:

  • Handle irregular wood chips and mixed feed materials
  • Separate different wood chip sizes
  • Accommodate a bulk density of 200–250 kg/m³ 
  • Provide multiple screening sizes within one machine

This was different from a simple application where the objective is only to remove oversized wood chips.

To meet the customer’s requirements, Sanyuantang configured the FYBS-4060 as a four-layer wood chip sorting system.

The screen apertures were:

70 mm → 55 mm → 35 mm → 12 mm

The material passes through successive screening decks, allowing different size fractions to be separated during the screening process.

Why FYBS-4060 Was Recommended

1. Four-layer configuration

The customer required multiple size classifications rather than one simple screening point. The FYBS-4060 could be configured with four screening decks, making it suitable for the required 70 / 55 / 35 / 12 mm separation.

2. Suitable for irregular wood chips

Wood chips are irregular materials. Their length, width, thickness and orientation can vary significantly. The oscillating screening motion provides continuous movement across the screening surface, supporting the separation of irregular bulk materials.

3. Adapted to complex feed material

The customer’s material contained not only wood chips but also roots and small debris. The screening configuration was therefore selected according to the actual feed characteristics instead of treating the material as a uniform wood-chip stream.

For a wood chip sorting project, Sanyuantang recommends providing more information than simply the material name.

Before selecting a wood chip sorter, customers should confirm:

1. Required particle sizes: Define the minimum and maximum sizes and how many final size fractions are required.

2. Material composition: Identify whether the feed contains roots, bark, oversized wood pieces, stones or other debris.

3. Bulk density: Bulk density affects the material volume handled by the screening system and should be considered during equipment selection.

4. Moisture and particle shape: Wet or irregular wood chips can behave differently on the screen. Moisture content and particle geometry should therefore be considered when selecting screen apertures.

5. Number of screening decks : One screening deck may be sufficient for simple oversized-material separation. Multiple decks are more appropriate when several particle-size fractions are required.
